The name Fleshwater doesn’t ring a bell? Then be sure to check the most popular streaming services. They were formed in 2017 by vocalist/guitarist Anthony DiDio, drummer Matt Wood and bassist Jeremy Martin, aka three quarters of metalcore/nu-metal band Vein.fm. Together with charismatic figurehead Marisa Shirar (aka Mirsy), Fleshwater serves up a spellbinding adaptation of shoegaze and soft grunge, also known as ‘nu gaze’. Their full length debut ‘We're Not Here to Be Loved’ (2022) was very successful on the other side of the Atlantic. The album is not innovative as such but recombines classic 90s influences into an exciting new whole. The alternation between brooding and high-energy material works like a charm and the vocal tandem Shirar/DiDio complements each other perfectly, with Shirar’s haunting voice taking centre stage overall. If a blend of shoegaze, soft grunge, alt metal and post-hardcore is your thing then you should add Fleshwater to your list. #GMM25
