Dream Theater are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their inception this year and are widely considered part of prog metal’s Big Three. Known for their intricate compositions and the technical prowess of its members, they draw on influences including Rush, Yes, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd and Judas Priest, resulting in a blend of heavy metal and prog rock. The 2010 departure of drummer Mike Portnoy sent a shock wave through the prog scene; his subsequent return in 2023 galvanised the band as they entered the studio to record their 16th album ‘Parasomnia’, which is scheduled to drop in February 2025.
