Cattle Decapitation is probably one of the most surprising band names imaginable for a band with an unwavering commitment to animal rights. Two members lead a vegetarian lifestyle off the road and on the road when possible. Founded in 1996 in San Diego, this deathgrind band has enjoyed increasing popularity since the mid-2010s with the successive releases ‘Monolith of Inhumanity’ (2012) and ‘The Anthropocene Extinction’ (2015). The latter is the first album where the ferocious, uninterrupted sonic assault is dialled back in favour of more melody. This also goes for the vocals as Travis Ryan developed a unique style of clean vocals he himself calls ‘melodic screaming’, all the while using his multi-octave range to maximum effect. In recent years, they have continued to refine their approach while maintaining a lyrical focus on animal rights, environmentalism and misanthropy. The contrast between melodic and harsh elements has become a signature, with Travis Ryan’s clean vocals often creating a sense of desolation or urgency. This is a real treat for fans of progressive death metal and grindcore. #GMM25
